Couples
Couples therapy
Purpose
An integrative approach to couples therapy, focused on formulation of the relationship dynamics impacting the problem areas. I draw on evidence-based models (the Gottman Method and Schema Therapy for Couples) and attention to the personality style differences in the couple, to focus on increasing opportunities for the couple to experience their partner differently and use practical skills to reduce cycles of conflict.
The work is directed at managing conflict, increasing emotional connection and closeness, improving communication skills, and building the capacity to understand and attune to one another and to grow as a unit that recognises the differences between two individuals.
Who it is for
For couples seeking to work on relationship stress, disconnection, conflict and life transitions.
Whilst all couples are welcome to connect for more information, I have a particular interest in supporting couples where one or both individuals have mental health difficulties, personality disorders or significant trauma histories, using a Schema Therapy for Couples approach.
Process
- Assessment and formulation, over two to three sessions: what brings you now, the history of the relationship, what each of you wants from the work, and an individual session with each partner
- The formulation is set out and agreed together, with the goals for the work
- Intervention phase, drawing on the Gottman Method and Schema Therapy for Couples. Length is agreed from the formulation rather than fixed in advance
- Termination phase: consolidating what has changed and how the couple will carry it on
